Society gains US student market share, growing fast to now support over 4,000 community apps globally
Two students from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and King’s College London have reimagined student communities across the globe following their personal experiences as Presidents of two of the largest student clubs.
The “Society App” that they have created is fast becoming the go-to solution for College and University student clubs and organizations. Growth of US market share is at the expense of incumbent solutions such as GroupMe and iMessage, which are being replaced by Society. Organic uptake is also being seen in several other countries where Society is growing through word of mouth.
“Society is everything that an organization could possibly need, all in one place and all for free. You build your very own branded app in 60 seconds…”
Society is now active in over 130 Colleges in the US alone. This growth was achieved within the last 6 months, driven by Ernst Ma, Co-Founder and President of the US division. Ernst states that, “Society is everything that an organization could possibly need, all in one place and all for free. You build your very own branded app in 60 seconds and that’s why student clubs are switching across to us everyday.”
Ernst is now a final year Economics student at UCLA where he was the President of the Interfraternity Council overseeing 22 ‘Greek Life’ social fraternities and over 1,600 UCLA students.
“Society is the platform that empowers students to not only build their own community app, but the ability to find other communities to join 24/7 and to safely participate is the real power behind Society…”
Society creates a safe and secure ecosystem for each College environment, students have to sign in with their verified College email address. All direct messages and group chats are encrypted end-to-end. And the best part is that Society pledges to never sell your personal data.
Ernst shares his vision, “Student leaders are now moving away from group chat platforms such as GroupMe because it’s just not fit for purpose to run an organization effectively. And this isn’t just Greek Life on the West Coast or the East Coast, this is all types of organizations, all over the US nationwide. Society is the platform that empowers students to not only build their own community app, but the ability to find other communities to join 24/7 and to safely participate is the real power behind Society.”
“The global opportunity is huge and our next big target is to attract 1 million memberships…”
Every community app on the Society platform is a marketplace for College students. With over 4,000 apps, the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) on the Society platform has reached over $300,000 and this is before leveraging the revenue possibilities. Society now expects to reach over $3M GMV within the next 24 months.
Dr Matthew Billington, Co-Founder and CEO, dreamt of Society when he was the President of his Dental School and found running an organization was incredibly fragmented, which involved a number of different solutions resulting in falling engagement.
Due to the rapid traction achieved by Society, Matthew has now put his dentistry career on hold indefinitely to help take Society worldwide and to ensure that it achieves its full potential, “The global opportunity is huge and our next big target is to attract 1 million memberships, I have no doubt that we will get there quite soon. With a comprehensive offering including the all-in-one community communications and the marketplace for merchandise, products, event bookings and tickets supported by payments facilities, this is why Society is winning market share from the likes of GroupMe, iMessage and WhatsApp.”
